The Green project of April 2015 is the waste-to-energy plant of Vantaa Energy.
The plant will produce 920 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of district heat and 600 GWh of electricity per year corresponding to about half of Vantaa's district heat requirement and about 30 per cent of the city's electricity need each year. The mixed waste is mainly collected from households in the Helsinki area.
The flue gas cleaning methods of the plant represent the best available technology. Therefore, the plant falls below the emission limits permitted by the waste incineration directive by an average of 50 per cent.
The earth construction work for the plant started in autumn 2011, the foundation stone was laid in May 2012, and the topping-out ceremony was held in May 2013. The trial run of the plant started in March 2014. The plant was inaugurated on the 17th April in 2014 and it was completed on schedule and on budget. Total cost was about 300 million €.
